Emergency grant aid for hurricane disaster in the Republic of Haiti

1. On September 19 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency grant aid of some 1.6 million dollars (about 180 million yen) through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for people in the Republic of Haiti, who suffer from the recent consecutive hurricane strikes.

2. The Government of Japan decided to provide this emergency grant aid considering the need for humanitarian aid for the serious damage caused by the hurricane disaster and also based upon the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Haiti.

3. The Government of Japan has already provided emergency relief goods (including plastic sheets, water purifiers, portable jerry cans, tents, blankets, electric generators, sleeping mats, water tanks) equivalent to about 17 million yen for the disaster caused by Hurricane Gustav and also provided emergency relief goods (plastic sheets, water purifiers, portable jerry cans, tents, blankets, sleeping mats and water tanks) equivalent to about 22 million yen for the disasters caused by Hurricanes Hanna and Ike. With the grant aid extended this time, Japan's emergency assistance for Haiti's hurricane disasters amounts to some 219 million yen in total.

Emergency Grant Aid

(1) Food Assistance to hurricane-affected population in Haiti through WFP (around 1 million US$) : Distribution of Food (Cereals, Pulses, Vegetable Oil, Salt)

(2) Assistance of Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items to hurricane-affected population in Haiti through IOM (around 0.6 million US$): Shelter Improvement, Distribution of Non-Food Items
